1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
If you try to keep the same friends that you were sinning with, and they are still behaving the same, it is easy for them to corrupt the change that is taking place in your heart. When you are ready, God may open the door again for you to go back and minister to them and be an example of God’s transforming love. If you go too early either you may fall or they may become offended.
This season can be a very lonely and confusing place. We are relational beings and desire the encouragement, affirmation, and joy that come from friendships. It is so important not to get stuck in this season of separation. God doesn’t want us to be alone. He has friends (divine connections) that he has called to sharpen us in our new season. He will place people in our lives with similar gifts and talents to help grow one another in the Lord.
Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV)
As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Friendship is a beautiful thing when you can see the fruit of the relationship and watch one another grow. So how do you make new friends? Well, a lot of times God will send people to be friends in our lives that we may have never normally even considered communicating with. We need to be open and friendly.
Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)
24 A man who has friends must himself be friendly,[a]
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
When we are friendly to others, it opens up doors of opportunity to start a relationship that God can use to bless us. God will use these very people to have your back when even your family has abandoned you. A friend will love you through your bad times, even when you have made mistakes.
Proverbs 17:17 (AMP)
17 A friend loves at all times, and is born, as is a brother, for adversity.
A true friend will give you wise council based on the truth of the word of God. They will correct you in love and you will be able to rejoice in the compassion that comes from your friendship.
Proverbs 27:9 (AMP)
9 Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend’s counsel that comes from the heart.
Most importantly, when we feel no one else understands or is there in our time of need, we must know that God is there for us. As believers in God, we have access to His friendship. He wants us to come to him and share our deepest concerns, most exciting dreams, and intimate desires with Him. After all, He is the one who has given them to us and has the power to release the very thing that we need to see it happen!
James 2:23 (AMP)
23 And [so] the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed in (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on) God, and this was accounted to him as righteousness (as conformity to God’s will in thought and deed), and he was called God’s friend.
When we become friends with God, it is so much easier to be a good friend to others. He will give us wisdom, love, and the right words to say for every situation and make us compassionate and understanding where we once were cold.
Father, we thank You for friendship. Forgive us for holding on to friendships that are not good for us. Give us the strength to separate from those that are corrupting our good habits. Help us be open to the new relationships that you place on our path. We want to be sharpened like iron in the presence of our friends. Perfect us in our purpose and gifts so that we may be a testimony and example for those who once knew us in our sin. Help us connect with those that You have called us to, but most importantly help us connect with You. We know You as Father, but want to also know You as friend. We want to tell You everything and hear what You have to say about every situation. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
