The Rules Keep Us Safe

One summer morning, I was hanging out with one of my friends. We were getting into the car. I put my one year old daughter in first. To avoid being strapped in, she climbs to the other side where my friend is standing on the outside of the door. As I am about to grab her, I see that she has something in her hand that she is looking at. I couldn’t believe my eyes. If I hadn’t seen it for myself, I probably wouldn’t have believed it! Between her thumb and pointer finger she was holding a wasp. The way she was holding it, was preventing her from being stung. How am I supposed to keep her from being stung? I knew if I panicked then she would panic. I had to stay calm and not put fear in her. My friend calmly opened the door and I told her to let go. Thankfully the wasp just flew away and my daughter did not get stung! How do we teach our children to be cautious without giving them a spirit of fear? If my friend and I freaked out like we wanted to, the situation could have turned into a great fiasco. As adults, we set the atmosphere of our environment. We are the thermostats. Our children will react and respond how they see us behaving. It is important to teach our children that there are consequences to our actions. That the rules are to keep us safe. That we as parents give them rules to protect them just as God gives us rules to protect us! So I needed to teach my daughter that we don’t need to be afraid of wasps, but it’s best to avoid them and definitely don’t touch them or we can get hurt.

Proverbs 22:3 (NLT) 3 A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

Proverbs 4:14-15 (KJV) 14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away

Teaching our children to avoid certain things and people is wise. It keeps them safe, but we also need to make sure that we are not creating a spirit of fear to come upon them. We must make sure that we are teaching them in love. That we are showing them God’s perfect love that casts out all fear. That they understand boundaries and consequence. Who ever said parenting was easy?!

1 John 4:18 (KJV) 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

So the only way to create a healthy understanding of rules is to model a behavior of following rules (setting an example), setting the atmosphere with your behavior/attitude, and teaching all things in love. I know it is easier said than done, but with God’s help all things are possible!

Father, we thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. That everything we have questions for, You have an answer. Show us how to search Your word out to find all the answers we seek. Give us understanding in our journey as parents. Show us how to raise our children in your perfect love so they may be bold and courageous yet prudent and wise. Make us thermostats that keep a balanced temperature in our homes. Forgive us for overreacting and behaving badly in front of our children and most of all before you. Teach us how to respond to every circumstance in order to bring You glory. Give us the grace we need to be model parents. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

She Wants To Be Like Me

During one long needed naptime, I made the dreadful mistake of falling asleep while breastfeeding the baby.  My little ones are extremely busy and definitely keep me on my toes. My two year old daughter wakes up before everyone and decides to go into the front and take the stuff out of my breast pump bag. I hear the soft sound of bags moving and I pop up. She has taken all the milk bags and wrote on them with the black sharpie marker that was in the bag, not to mention on herself and clothes. She took the nipple cream and had it smeared all over her face. Thank God the marker didn’t make it to the walls or furniture and the cream into her eyes! So as I began to scold and correct her for going into Mommy’s stuff that she knew she wasn’t allowed to touch, she proceeded to take breast pads from underneath her shirt that were placed in the exact right spot. This is also my baby that will lift up her shirt to breastfeed her baby doll. At this point I realized, she was just trying to be like me. Our children are a reflection of us at this young age. They are so impressionable. She wants to do what she sees Mommy do. So it made me think. What else am I doing that she is watching? The answer is everything! Am I setting a good example in front of her? Am I always being the person that I want her to be? Of course I know that I am human and that I will make mistakes. How am I responding to those mistakes in front of her? Am I being humble and repenting when wrong? Am I living out the word?

1 Thessalonians 2-12

10 You are witnesses, and God also, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe;  11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged[b] every one of you, as a father does his own children,  12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

Colossians 1:10

that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

God has called us to be parents and raise our children as the next generation of leaders, laborers, and servants of Christ. Are we living devoutly, justly, and blamelessly? Are we exhorting, comforting and charging our children into their purpose?

 Matthew 12:33

[ A Tree Known by Its Fruit ] “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

We are the trees and our children are our fruit. What kind of fruit are we producing? I want to be a good tree that produces good fruit!

Father, we thank you that you have trusted us with the precious children you have given us. Forgive us for not always living out the word. Help us seek you in all things that we might live worthy of our call to produce good fruit. Let us be trees planted by living waters, drawing from the water of the word continuously. Be our strength when we are weak. Convict us of our behavior that is making a negative impact on our children. Let our lives give you glory. Help us be devout, just, and blameless before you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

God Still Heals

Children are a blessing in so many ways. They bring so much flavor into the mix of my life, I couldn’t imagine not being a mother.  All mothers know, that children not only bring joy, but they also bring out the lioness in us all. Nobody is gonna mess with my babies, especially not the devil! Children will cause you to pray like you never thought you had power to.  You want to improve your prayer life? Start praying for your children. The Holy Spirit will start reminding you of all kind of things to pray about. I remember when my oldest daughter was about 8 years old she was at a friend’s house playing. She hurt her ankle doing a cartwheel. Her foot hit the corner of a wooden toy chest.  She didn’t tell me when I picked her up. I guess it wasn’t hurting her enough yet. That weekend she had went to the zoo and amusement park where she was on her feet all day.  Her foot and ankle became extremely swollen. I took her to the emergency room. They told me it was fractured and she needed to see her primary doctor. Her primary doctor sent her to a children’s university to see a bone specialist. This situation caused me to pray intensely. Before going to the hospital I laid hands on her and declared that she was healed. I believed that God was the same today as He was yesterday and was concerned about her wholeness. We went to the university and she took more ex-rays. They said that the other doctors were wrong. She did not have any fractures in her foot or ankle! That’s what they said, but I know the truth. God healed her! Hallelujah!!! As a babe in Christ, this brought me to a new level of faith. I pray this testimony stirs up yours as well. Jesus finished the work at the cross. We have already been healed by His stripes. I know many are going through all kinds of situations. It is a battle and a struggle. All of our journey’s and struggles are different, but God wants us all to be made whole.  Don’t give up. God still heals. He still delivers. He loves each and every one of us and is concerned about all the details of our lives. There is nothing too big or too small for Him to accomplish.

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

We are already healed! Try looking at yourselves and your children and see healing no matter what our natural eyes see or what the doctors are saying. I know it’s not easy. Focus on the end results. Miracles still happen!

Father, we come in the name of Jesus, thanking You for the full work of the cross. Jesus took those stripes so that we can be healed. Today we say His beatings were not in vain. We accept and expect healing for ourselves and our families. Forgive us for complaining instead of praying. Build up our faith. Let us experience Your miracle power. Show us how to pray and believe. We trust You. We know that You want the best for us. We give You everything. Fill us with Your Word and Your Spirit. Let us feel Your presence. Let our testimonies give You glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

I Can't Find Them

Yay. My big girls get to go on a mini vacation with a close family friend! It’s a holiday weekend and the weather is supposed to be perfect for outdoor fun.  They need to bring their swimsuits. They are very excited and are packing their things.  The day before it’s time to leave, my 11 year old comes, “Mommy, I can’t find my swimsuit bottoms”. This upset me because they just got new tankinis for a spring break trip we went on. I refused to go and buy new ones because she missed placed them in her room.  How does that even happen? She has one room to maintain, which appears to be clean. Well, helping her look I found she was hiding her mess instead of actually cleaning (that’s for an entire different blog)! She looked everywhere. I looked everywhere. Bottoms nowhere to be found. I refused yet still to buy another one! I told her to go pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show her where she put it. She did it halfheartedly and came back with no results. She went to school, came home, and asked had I found them. I hadn’t. I told her to pray in the spirit and ask God to show her. She was frustrated and told me she already did.  I told her to cast her net on the other side. “Huh”? She said.

John 21:6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Jesus’ disciples had already did what they knew how to do to catch fish. They were ready to give up. They decided that the fish weren’t there, but when Jesus told them to cast their nets they caught so many fish that their nets couldn’t contain them. So I told her to pray, go back in by faith and this time you’ll find them. She prayed, went back in and looked in all the same places. As she looked in her closet, she pulled something off the top shelf and her swim bottoms fell right down. Now, I already looked on that shelf. I took everything down and they weren’t there. She said she had took everything down before too. I believe God sent his angels to replace those swim bottoms to teach my daughter a lesson of faith. God is the same yesterday today and forever more. If you believe in heaven and hell, then let me tell you angels and demons are real. Angels are activated by our prayers

Psalm 91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Matthew 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

The Word works! Put it to action and see for yourself. God is concerned about the things that concern you.

Psalm 138:8 The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

On the big scale of life, my daughter’s swim bottoms aren’t a huge issue, but they were an issue to her and God heard her prayers! Anything that you ask in Jesus name, if you believe, it will be given to you.

Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Father we thank You that Your word doesn’t change. We thank You that you are concerned about even the small stuff and answer our prayers.  Help us to come to you for everything that we may do things according to Your will. We want to experience all of Your goodness and benefits. Help us to believe with a new level of faith and be confident that you will hear our prayers. Lord activate our angels that have charge over us to protect, war, and minister on our behalf. Show us these teachable moments where we can put our faith in action and make an impact on our children. Help us use your word as a manual to teach our children and to live our own lives.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!

Mothering six children is not an easy task, but by God's grace it's one of my greatest assignments. I have a lot of experience at making mistakes and letting God correct me. I pray that you can learn from my trials and grow into the parent that God created you to be.
