The will of God is not something that we stumble on accidently. Even as adults it is not always clear or easy to make decisions according to God’s will. We have to overcome our own fleshly will and seek God’s Word to understand what He wants for us. We are to move forward with peace as confirmation that we are on the right path. Our children, on the other hand, have no clue of what this looks like. Their entire being, sometimes exudes chaos. They are often all over the place and if left to their own devices would be in much harm and destruction. They learn from the example that we set, the boundaries that we make, the discipline that we give, and what we teach them (intentionally and unintentionally). We have to show them what peace feels like. My one year old daughter seems to be advancing very fast. She obviously is trying to catch up to the other two toddlers. In doing this, she is learning her voice and understanding what her likes and dislikes are. She also wants to express what she does and doesn’t want to do. Her new thing is stomping her one leg and saying “No” when I tell her to do something. Imagine my surprise the first time she did this. I have never had any of my other children challenge me at such an early age. Now the action of the disrespect that she is exhibiting is by no means cute, but I couldn’t help to be tickled by her sudden realization of her own will. It is so hard to discipline them in all of their cuteness sometimes, but what seems cute now could lead them to destruction later. If we respond inappropriately by laughing or showing our amusement, it will only feed the behavior. We have to put the Word of God in their hearts and apply it to their lives. This will activate God’s will on the inside of them. We have to live as an example of the Word so they will see what God’s will looks like. We have to be humble, have a heat of repentance, be forgiving, and show mercy. We have to remove the chaos from their souls with prayer and application of God’s Word so that they know what peace feels like. I wonder does God ever want to laugh at our own will. Does He ever turn his head and compose Himself while He gently corrects us. God knows that we want to be in His will and don’t always know or want to know what is best for us. Sometimes our foolishness seems right because we haven’t yet caught the revelation of what the Word says about our situation. God always has a way of taking the consequences of our foolishness and teaching us how not to act. When my oldest daughter was around seven years old I remember her asking me “Mommy, who’s side are you on? Are You on God’s side or the devil’s side?” She said, “There is no in between, there is either one or the other.” We have to teach our children to give their whole hearts to Jesus! Every decision leads to either life or death. God is merciful and will work our process out through our mistakes, but we have to have a heart towards Him to receive His correction and understand That His will is for our best. We don’t want to stomp our feet at God and tell Him no or he will surely let us learn from the consequences. Thank God that His mercies are new everyday and he always gives us a chance/choice to get it right just as we give our children a chance/choice to get it right the next time after we discipline them. It’s something how discipline will make you think twice before making your next choice.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Deuteronomy 30:19
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;
We have to teach our children how to choose life. We must teach them that everything that looks good isn’t good for them and everything that seems right isn’t right.
1 Corinthians 10:23 (NLT)
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”-but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything” –but not everything is beneficial.
Proverbs 16:25
There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
Proverbs 21:8
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts.
God wants our best so that He can give us His best. We have access to the fullness of the cross. The inheritance of God is our portion. It is our right as children of God and will be passed on to our children by us. We have the responsibility to mold them, train them, pray for them, and prophetically speak over them as they navigate the will of God for their own lives.
Father, we thank You for our children. We thank You that You have entrusted us to activate Your purpose for their lives. Forgive us for not always being living examples of Your Word. Help us shape them into vessels that will carry Your perfect Will as they pursue the purpose that You have placed on the inside of them. Show us how to discipline justly while showing mercy and being forgiving. Help us not feed their foolishness by encouraging them with laughter when they are doing wrong. Give us wisdom and strategy to train them in knowing how to make decisions according to Your word and confirmed by Your peace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
