As always, my four year old son keeps me on my toes and causes me to search God’s word for parables of teaching. The more that I write, the more I realize that God speaks through everything and ALL the answers are in His word. He woke up early with me recently and was watching me get my day started. As I began to make my coffee he spoke. He said, “You don’t have to have coffee every day, Mommy. It has too much sugar.” I looked at Him and said, “Okay Dr. Rimpsom.” He said, “No, Daddy Rimpson”. What? I couldn’t believe, for one, that he was watching how much sugar that I was using, and two, that he was trying to be my daddy! I found it interesting that he chose the authority of the father to be more influential than that of a doctor. I also found it interesting that he understands the need for the father to correct and train his children. He didn’t just tell me not to do something; he also told me why it may hurt me (the heart of a true teacher).
Proverbs 4:1
Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.
Children desire correction even though it may not seem so at the time. They know that when we correct them it is because we love them and don’t want to see them get hurt.
Proverbs 3:12
For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
We correct them in love because we delight in them. We want to see them do well on their journey through life. As we delight in them, they are proud that we are their parents. They look up to us because they trust that we are teaching them the right things. At a young age, didn’t you always believe everything you’re parents told you?
Proverbs 17:6
Children’s children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.
We must represent our Heavenly Father well. How we parent our children will leave an impact on the way that they view God. We are to give them good gifts naturally and spiritually for their mind, body and souls. We need to feed their spirits with the Word of God , and instruct them in the way of the Lord.
Matthew 7:11
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
When they can trust us to give them the truth and they know/understand that we love them and have their best interests at heart, then they can perceive how much more God must love them.
John 8:38
I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.”
Just as Jesus only spoke what Father God showed Him, our children do what they see us do. The Father is truly an important role in a child’s life and carries much authority. Some don’t have earthly father’s present (this is the work of the enemy). In this case, mothers have to take on the role as the spiritual head and point their children to Father God. God will not forsake any of us, even our little ones!
Father God we thank You in the name of Jesus for wisdom concerning raising our children. We thank You for Your correction and instruction that shows that You love us. Forgive us for not always following Your example and showing our children how Your word says to act. We honor Your authority and asked that our children will Honor their Father’s and Mother’s authority. Turn the hearts of the father to the children and the hearts of the children to their father. Restore honor in families. Help us lead our children closer to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
