Don't Stunt Their Growth

Watching our children grow is a rewarding yet scary process.  Each milestone is a proud parent moment as they successfully mature into their next level of growth. But if you’re like me, watching them fail can feel excruciating and unbearable. Sometimes this causes us to hinder their growth by helping them too much. Right now I’m in two complete different seasons of graduating my children to the next level of maturity. My youngest baby is my only baby that never went to daycare/preschool. I have breastfed my babies and have never had a problem weaning them off the breast because I also pumped and they took milk from a bottle from other people. Being at home, I never had to pump much, causing her to be very clingy to me. I’ve always stopped breastfeeding by the one year old mark and now I’m two months behind schedule. I know many mommies breastfeed longer and have different opinions about this, but she eats real food and no longer is eating for nourishment. She is strictly pacifying herself. Mommy has four other children to tend to and all of them need me for one thing or another. The problem is she will throw a fit when I won’t let her. She will fall out, kick, scream, refuse to eat, and just be in a complete tantrum my way or no way mode. It’s easier to give her what she wants, but it’s not what is best for our family dynamic. It is time to graduate and learn the next thing. My oldest daughter is a sophomore in high school.  She does well, but always wants me to help her with her English Honors writing assignments. She knows this is my passion. She will ask so many questions, by the time she is done; I have helped way too much. She has taken advantage of this and now gets mad because I am limiting my help. I don’t want to see her fail, but if I don’t let her do it on her own, she will never learn. The best lessons are learned by trial and error. Nobody wants to fail, but failure will make you try harder, especially when there is a grade involved!

Hebrews 5:12 (AMP)

12 For even though by this time you ought to be teaching others, you actually need someone to teach you over again the very first principles of God’s Word. You have come to need milk, not solid food.

Hebrews 5:12-14 (MSG)

11-14 I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.

If we leave our children inexperienced and not let them learn through a process of their own choices, they will continue to act immature. They will become adults with arrested development. They will someday have to relearn what they have been taught because they weren’t ever given the opportunity to put the knowledge they have been given into action. As parents, it’s never fun to see our children upset with us and in tantrum mode, but our choices as a parent should be for their long term benefit and not for their instant gratification. When my mother would tell me “no” and I would get mad she use to say “wait ‘till you have kids, then you’ll understand”. Now I truly do understand. When I would ask my father for help, he would say “by helping you I would really be hindering you.” This would especially make me angry, but now I also understand his words. Both of my parents are gone now, but their words live on as I tell my children the same thing! Many things fail as we continue to live, but love never does.

1 Corinthians 13:8

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

As we train up our children and teach them right from wrong, we must give them room to make mistakes and always continue to love them just as God continues to love us. Sometimes what they want isn’t the best for them. Our teaching, correction, and withholding is for their benefit even if it doesn’t feel good to them at the time. It shows that we love them and want them to prosper.

Father, we thank You for Your wisdom and guidance as we raise our children. Forgive us for sometimes hindering their growth by helping them too much in fear of them failing. Show us how to lead them on the right path while also giving them room to learn from their own mistakes. Help us teach them right from wrong and make good decisions on their own according to your word. Keep your hand upon them as they go. Help us always act in love in every situation. Help us make disciples out of them so they will glorify You in everything that they do. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

Supernatural Is The New Normal

When I first accepted Jesus as my Savior, I was watching a television minister who caught my attention. He was talking about how we can ask God to release His angels to protect our children. I was brand new and hadn’t started praying over my children at night yet. I decided that every night I was going to pray that God send angels to protect my children even as they sleep. Soon after I started doing this, my daughter who was around 3 at the time, started waking up in the middle of the night crying. I thought she was having nightmares and would pray for peaceful sleep and dreams. When she continued to wake up, I finally asked her why she was crying. She said that there was a monster in the closet. So I ask her to describe it to me. She said it was the God monster. Huh? She said it was as tall as the ceiling and had wings that filled the room. It was like a bright light and it had a huge sword. Wow!

Daniel 10:5-6(NKJV)

5 I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz! 6 His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, his arms and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude.

Genesis 3:24 (NKJV)

24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

This was not a monster at all. This was an angel of protection watching over her as she slept. I explained to her what she was seeing and peace filled her sleep. She no longer was frightened by the appearance of this angel. Many times in the bible angels appear and say “fear not”.

Luke 2:10

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people

Angel’s have been sent to protect us, minister to us, and strengthen us. Their appearance is so great that many in the bible have fallen to their face with reverence, but it is clear that we are not to worship angels. It is to our benefit that we realize that they do exist. There is a supernatural realm that our prayers travel and our angels war for them to get answered.

Daniel 10:12-14 (NKJV)

12 Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come.”

This means there is also a demonic force that is working against us. This realm will cause fear and torment in our sleep and even in specific areas of our lives. Our children are greatly affected by this because of their childlike faith. They simply believe. This is a good thing, but we must teach them that they have power over the enemy. We can’t disregard the monsters they tell us about. If something is tormenting them at night, if we pay attention to what they say, we will be given strategy of how to pray and what to pray against. The enemy wants to place fear in them at an early age so that they won’t have the courage to fulfill their purpose. Each one of them has a different destiny and God has help for them. Their angels will encamp around them. We must fill them with the word of God and teach them how to pray. We have to take the “weirdness” out of the supernatural and make it the norm. This will empower our children to be world changers and walk in miracles, signs, and wonders. The world is crying for a solution. We are the answer!

Romans 8:18-20(NKJV)

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;

People are eagerly waiting for God’s glory to be revealed. They have a void that only Jesus can fill. What the world calls normal, has perverted the souls of man. We must set a standard in our children that the supernatural is normal. That it is normal for prayers to get answered. It is normal to lay hands on the sick and they recover. It is normal to experience miracles. We can make the Supernatural the new normal. Instead of our children fearing the enemy, the enemy will fear them!

Father, we thank You for Your supernatural power that You have given us by the Holy Spirit. We thank You for the angels that You have assigned to our family for our benefit. Show us how to put them in action on our behalf. Forgive us for not utilizing the power that You have given us to impact the world. Give us a deeper understanding of the supernatural and how to make it normal in our daily lives. Help us believe Your word in its fullness. Let us encounter You in new ways and experience You on new levels. Help us to see how You work on our behalf even when we can’t see with our natural eyes. We want our family to know Your miracle, signs, and wonders. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Pay Attention

Summer time vacation is quickly coming to an end. Many children are starting back to school this very week.  School is a place where our children can thrive and grow in their gifts and talents. There is so much for them to become involved in and experience. As they get older, their choices help form their opinions and mold their identities. With that being said, we must be on watch and very involved in the culture of their schools. We want their identities to be molded by their foundation in Christ and not by the double minded doctrines and perverted influences that they are exposed to. We want them to be the salt and light of the world, so we need not fear their surroundings, but we must be aware of who is influencing them. We need to be their sounding board for their questions and concerns. We must pay close attention to behavior changes and wavering attitudes. We can’t be their friends. We have to be their parents, but we must also establish a relationship of trust and respect so that they will feel free to talk to us about their issues.  We have to let them talk. We must listen, no matter how foolish it seems. We need to keep our game face on. If we respond too quickly and harshly, they will not come and tell us anything.  We can’t hide their exposure to false doctrine and perversion, it is everywhere. It starts with cartoons, commercials, television programs, movies and video games. Most of the time, it comes in the form of cuteness and appears to be innocent. All magic is witchcraft and we must teach our children the difference between magic and the miracle power of Jesus. We are entering in to a season where God is going to move powerfully in power and we must not only teach our children the difference but also prepare them for God to use them tremendously!  As they graduate into higher classes, the attack against Christianity becomes more blatant and other teachings become prominent. They are teaching Yoga in gym with all of its chantings and becoming one with the universe. Islam belief systems are being taught in readings, homosexuality is being celebrated, and witchcraft is the norm. We have to give them the truth and also show them how to find it themselves. We need to be diligent in seeking God’s word and asking for wisdom and understanding. If God is for us, then who can be against us? We win, but we have to be aware and equipped for the battle!

2 Corinthians 10:3-5(NKJV)

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Father, we thank You that you have given us Your word so that we are well equipped for every challenge before us. We thank You as we seek Your wisdom and understanding that You will freely give it to us. Forgive us for not paying attention to the influences around our children. Help us become more aware and give us strategy on how to approach every situation. Help us teach our children Your truth that they will have the mind of Christ. Show us how to fight each battle in prayer and destroy the lies of the enemy with the truth of Your word. Show us how to be approachable and attentive so our children won’t hesitate to come to us with any perversion they might encounter. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

Enjoy And Be Patient

Writing these blogs has really made me stop and look at every situation with a new set of eyes. I have been made aware God’s word in action and have been personally convicted of things that I need to change in my own household. God’s word is so rich in instruction to make our lives easier. Raising children can be just as much frustrating as it is rewarding.  Our schedules are busy and there is always something more that needs to get done. So many times we rush through our days not stopping to enjoy what God has given us, always trying to get to that next place of promise. It is good to work towards the next thing, but we must also remember to take pleasure in the now.

NKJV

Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.

VOICE

There is nothing better than for people to eat and drink and to see the good in their hard work. These beautiful gifts, I realized, too, come from God’s hand

We work hard to create a better atmosphere for our children. We teach them what we know and instruct them in the way that they should go.  Raising children is work! Our children are the good in our labor. The voice translation says beautiful gifts. Frustration is easily set in when we watch our children struggle or fail. We must realize that mistakes are necessary for the learning process. We have to use the circumstances as a teachable moment and move on. It is so important to celebrate the successes more than we dwell on the mistakes. As we learn to celebrate and enjoy our children, we will feel the frustration lift from our shoulders.  This verse says there is nothing better than enjoying the good of our work.  I want to live in this scripture. I know it sometimes feels that our children aren’t listening and they don’t get it. It seems the older they get, the more resistance we face. Trust me; they are catching more than you know. Just as you now sometimes hear your own mother come out of your own mouth, they are also having seeds planted that they might not realize are even there yet.  When Jesus told the parable of the seed and the sower, the seed that fell on good ground produced fruit with patience.  It takes time for God to perfect the word inside our children as well as in ourselves.  It has to take root in our hearts and complete an internal process.

NKJV

But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

VOICE

But some people hear the message and let it take root deeply in receptive hearts made fertile by honesty and goodness. With patient dependability, they bear good fruit.

Here it says that the seed is fertilized with honesty and goodness. If we want the seeds to grow we must train our children in these areas and wait patiently to see the fruit. When it comes, we have to take time to enjoy and celebrate it. It comes from the hand of God!

Father we thank You that You take pleasure in our prosperity and love to see us grow. Help us also take pleasure in the prosperity in our own children as they become adults. Make us more aware in the things that we need to take time to enjoy. Forgive us for moving too fast that we are only seeing the areas that need to be corrected without recognizing the success.  Give us patience in seeing the fruit produced by the seeds we’ve planted in our children. Help us train our children in honesty and goodness that the seeds in their heart may be fertilized. We thank you for the season that we are in. Help us find satisfaction in it even as we press forward to where You are taking us next. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

Mothering six children is not an easy task, but by God's grace it's one of my greatest assignments. My children are 18, 15, 7, 6, 4, and 2!  I have a lot of experience at making mistakes and letting God correct me. I pray that you can learn from my trials and grow into the parent that God created you to be.
